In this piece I explore the abandoned mill town of Daniels, Maryland. It was once an industrial hub in the late 1800s but is now a seldom used hiking trail.
To prepare our class for quick deadlines, our professor created a mock newscast for us. We had only two hours to report on five stories and edit them into a five minute newscast. I was the editor, and by the time all the stories were gathered I had about 30 minutes to put it together. While the newscast wasn't perfect, I learned about where the real news in a story is. We totally buried the lead by not putting the homicide story first, but it prepared me to put out better products in the future.
For this assignment we were asked to create a tutorial to teach our professor something. I chose a family trade secret: garbage soup. It was fun to play around with audio outside of a news story, and I quickly learned which sounds are great and which are much less pleasing.
